How to get Involved
Volunteers can be incorporated into almost all aspects of the Y organization. The YMCA of Greater Nashua’s volunteers are the finest role models available to the youth we serve. Some have a great deal of experience in working with youth and others are looking to become involved. You will be required to go through an application and background check process.
Reasons why People Volunteer
There are a multitude of rewards in volunteering at the Y. You get to meet new people and make new friends, and you get to make a difference in people’s lives all while developing skills and gaining invaluable experience. The Y provides people the opportunity to put into practice what they believe about life and give back to their community.
CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Aerobics Instructors
Organize and instruct classes that enable participants to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Early mornings and early evenings are available though days and times can be mutually agreed upon! Volunteers are asked to commit for the length of the term. Applicants must be certified in CPR and hold a current Y or other national aerobics certification. Opportunities are available in the Nashua and Merrimack branches.
Arts & Humanities Instructors and Assistants
The Y is looking for people who have the ability to draw, dance, paint, sing, play a musical instrument, write, and would like to share their talents! Volunteers should be passionate about their talent and able to create own curriculum. Hours and days flexible at the Merrimack Branch. Nashua Branch is looking for volunteers to help with ongoing classes. Schedule varies.
Assistant Swim Instructor
Do you enjoy swimming? Volunteers will assist the head instructor with the daily tasks and responsibilities of the classes. Days and times can be mutually agreed upon. Experience teaching swimming classes is a plus but not necessary. If working with in Youth Classes, must enjoying working with children. Opportunities are available in the Nashua and Merrimack Branches.
Committee Member
The Y is actively searching for individuals that have an interest in assisting them in improving the organization through committee work. Several groups are looking to add 2 or 3 new members. These groups meet once a month for one hour at the YMCA to work on topics relevant to that particular committee. Required skills: Some knowledge or skill in the area of the committee, Interpersonal communication skills, and knowledge of the greater Nashua area and its resources.
The Committees are:
- Board Development- This committee will focus on work related to Board member selection, orientation, education, networking, and advancement.
- Financial Development- This committee focuses on work related to fundraising for the organization. This includes special events (golf tournament and charity auction), annual Strong Kids Campaign, Capital Campaign for a new YMCA in Nashua, Endowment Development, and grant-writing.
- Audit- This committee focuses on work related to the overall governance of the organization. This includes hiring and review of the auditor, ethics monitoring, record retention and related items.
- Y Achievers Steering Committee- This committee will be run by individuals who can share their careers with local youth by organizing field trips, coordinating fundraising activities and setting up local outreach opportunities for the youth members and their mentors as a part of our new Achievers Program. The program will pair local high school youth with a community mentor to reach their career goals. This committee is slated to meet once every two months.
KidStop Babysitter
Play, socialize and provide supportive supervision to children (ages 6 weeks to 12 years) while their parents exercise. Opportunities are available in the Nashua Branch, Monday- Friday 9:00am-1:30pm and 4-8pm.
School’s Out Bus Monitor
The Nashua Y is looking for someone on Mondays and Fridays from 3-5pm to assist children ages 5-12 in getting off the busses and safely into the building.
Welcome Center Ambassador
The Nashua and Merrimack branches are in need of Welcome Center Greeters. These volunteers will welcome and interact with members, distribute sports equipment when necessary, and acknowledge members with account alerts. Shifts and branch locations vary.
Wellness Ambassador
Do you hate being lost in the gym? Don’t you wish there was a smiling face that you could go to for answers? The Y is looking to provide this to its members! If you’re a warm and enthusiastic person who genuinely likes to help people, this is the position for you! No extensive knowledge of fitness equipment is needed but should have a basic fitness knowledge. Shifts and branch locations vary.
Youth Basketball, Flag Football, and Soccer Coaches
Make a difference for the youth in your community: volunteer as a sports coach! Under the direction of the Youth Director, the Youth Sports Coach is responsible for teaching the youth the basic skills of the sport, and creating a fun, safe, and helpful environment for all youth involved. Classes are held once a week for 45 minutes on week nights and Saturday afternoons. Volunteers are asked to commit to an eight week term. Volunteers may coach as many classes as they choose. Ages enrolled in the class will range from 6 to 12 years. The position requires the volunteer to be friendly, courteous, helpful, and good with children, and parents. The person must have a background with the sport they are teaching and children. All coaching materials will be provided.
