Activate America® is the YMCA's response to our nation's growing health crisis. Our mission compels us to transform the way we work, both internally and externally, to support all kids, adults, families and communities in their pursuit of well-being in spirit, mind and body. In addition, through this work we strive to create and sustain healthier communities by actively participating in our communities and connecting our networks and resources to influence decisions that impact health.
Sixty-five percent of new YMCA members tell us that they either struggle to stay healthy or have never tried to become healthier before joining. One of the guiding principles of Activate America® is that the YMCA should advocate a holistic approach to well-being that intentionally goes beyond physical activity and nutrition to whole-self-health.
By stepping back and listening to members, we are learning that they need more then just a health and wellness center. Health seekers are searching for groups they feel connected to due to a common bond...a bond that supports and motivates them and their families while they are on their path towards a healthy lifestyle change. A path that is successful and sustainable because of a high level of engagement between the member, the staff and most importantly, other members.
YMCAs demonstrate their commitment to Activate America® in the following ways:
Over 900 YMCAs joined September's America On the Move Week at the YMCA. During this week, YMCAs host events and activities to motivate people to take small steps to get active and increase the number of daily steps they take.
YMCAs in nearly 50 states are a part of Pioneering Healthier Communities, a project that engages key community stakeholders to develop strategies that reduce barriers and increase support for healthy living in local communities.
National partners who provide expert advice to YMCAs across the nation regarding Activate America® include Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Steps to a HealthierUS initiative, Harvard School of Public Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, Disney Channel, Kellogg Company, JCPenney Afterschool Fund, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and PepsiCo.
We hope you will join our commitment to Activate America® and Greater Nashua by taking part in our upcoming America On the Move week September 20 - 27, 2009.
