How to get Involved

Volunteers can be incorporated into almost all aspects of the YMCA organization.  The YMCA of Greater Nashua's volunteers are the finest role models available to the youth we serve.  Some have a great deal of experience in working with youth and others are looking to become involved.  You will be required to go through an application and background check process.  You will also have an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.

There are a multitude of rewards in volunteering at the YMCA of Greater Nashua.  You get to meet new people and make new friends, and you get to make a difference in people's lives all while developing skills and gaining invaluable experience.  The YMCA provides people the opportunity to put into practice what they believe about life and give back to their community.

Volunteer Opportunities

Below is a list of volunteer opportunities available at both our Nashua and Merrimack branches. (This list is not all encompassing) All of these listings are for the current term that runs September 8th through November 1st, unless otherwise specified.

  

Ongoing Volunteering Opportunities

Position:  Aerobics Instructors

Shift(s): Flexible

Branch(es): Nashua YMCA

Description: Organize and instruct classes that enable participants to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Early mornings and early evenings are available though days and times can be mutually agreed upon! Volunteers are asked to commit for the length of the term. Applicants must be certified in CPR and hold a current YMCA or other national aerobics certification.

  

Position:  Assistant Swim Instructor

Shift(s):  Days and Times are Flexible

Branch(es): Nashua or Merrimack YMCA

Description: Do you enjoy swimming? Volunteers will assist the head instructor with the daily tasks and responsibilities of the classes. Days and times can be mutually agreed upon. Experience teaching swimming classes is a plus but not necessary. If working with in Youth Classes, must enjoying working with children.

 

Position: Committee Member

Shift(s): 1 Hour per month

Branch(es): Merrimack YMCA

Description: The YMCA is actively searching for individuals that have an interest in assisting them in improving the organization through committee work. Six specific groups are looking to add 2 or 3 new members. These groups meet once a month for one hour at the YMCA to work on topics relevant to that particular committee. The Committees are:

  • Human Resources- This committee will focus on personnel policy updates, state and federal compliance, salary administration, documentation, and hiring practices.
  • Membership-This committee will focus on establishing and reviewing membership policies, pricing, promotions, acquisition, retention, and recovery strategies.
  • Board Development- This committee will focus on work related to Board member selection, orieentation, education, networking, and advancement.
  • Program- This committee focuses on review of existing programs, planning/ development of new programs, identifying the program needs of YMCA members and the community, and pricing.
  • Financial Development- This committee focuses on work related to fundraising for the organization. This includes special events (golf tounament and charity auction), annual Strong Kids Campaign, Capital Campaign for a new YMCA in Nashua, Endowment Development, and grant-writing.
  • Audit- This committee focuses on work related to the overall governance of the organization. This includes hiring and review of the auditor, ethics monitoring, record retention and related items.

Required skills: Some knowledge or skill in the area of the committee, Interpersonal communication skills, and knowledge of the greater Nashua area and its resources.

   

Position: Kid Stop Babysitter

Shift(s): Monday- Friday 4:30-7:30pm

Branch(es): Nashua YMCA

Description: Play, socialize and provide supportive supervision to the children (6 months- 6 years of age). Volunteers will also assist counselors with creating activities for chilren.  



Position: Strive Center Volunteer

Shift(s): Monday,  Tuesday, and Thursday from 4-7pm & Saturday 9am-12noon

Branch(es): Nashua YMCA

Description: The Strive strength training circuit consist of 7 pieces of equipment sized just right for smaller users, the circuit offers a safe resistance-training alternative to adult sized machines. Volunteers would help with providing instruction on Circuit Training Equipment and providing instruction in flexibility and floor exercises. Volunteers should have previous knowledge of weight training. Training on the specific Strive Equipment will be provided.
