Guide to Swim Levels

Parent Guide to Youth Learn To Swim Levels

Check off each skill that your child can do comfortably.  If your child can do each skill, move to the next level.  If your child cannot do each skill, stay in that level.

YOUTH SWIM 1 - Each of the four levels, listed below, must be completed BEFORE a child can advance to Youth Swim 2.  Most children will spend several terms in EACH level before advancing to the next one.
Polliwog 1
I can put my whole head under water and blow bubbles.
I can swim on my belly the width of two lanes without a float all by myself.
I can lay on my back, with my ears in the water, and count to five.
I can lay on my back, kick my feet and do fishy fins.    
Polliwog 2
I can do 10 bobs with rhythmic breathing.
I can jump in by myself.
I can swim on my belly, with my face in the water and big arms, half the length of the pool.
I can swim on my back, with big arms, half the length of the pool.
Guppy 1
I can do rotary breathing.
I can swim on my belly with rotary breathing and big arms for one length of the pool.
I can swim back crawl for one length of the pool.
I can do elementary back stroke kick.
Guppy 2
I can swim front crawl with rotary breathing for one full pool length without stopping.
I can swim back crawl for one full pool length without stopping.
I can swim elementary backstroke and breaststroke, each, for one half the length of the pool.
I can swim three pool lengths without stopping.

YOUTH SWIM 2 - Swimmers who are in Minnow, Fish, Flying Fish or Shark.  Swimmers will be grouped with others of similar swim ability on the first day of class.
Minnow
I can swim front crawl and back crawl, each, for two full pool lengths, without stopping.
I can swim breaststroke and elementary backstroke for one full pool length.
I can swim six pool lengths without stopping.
Fish
I can swim front crawl and back crawl, each, for four lengths of the pool without stopping..
I can swim two lengths of the pool for each of the following: breaststroke, elementary backstroke
  and sidestroke.
I can do open turns on my front and back.
I can swim ten pool lengths without stopping.
Flying Fish
I can swim one pool length of butterfly.
I can do flip turns on my front and back.
I am increasing my endurance beyond 20 pool lengths.
Shark
I can swim more than 500 yards, with flip turns and excellent stroke technique.
I am ready to learn aquatic rescue skills, racing technique and fitness swimming.
